Epigastric Hernias
If you have an EPIGASTRIC HERNIA the potential for persistent pain or complications arising from the presence of this hernia, surgical repair may well be recommended. An Epigastric Hernia occurs due to a weakness, gap or opening in the muscles or tendons of the upper abdominal wall, between the breast bone and the navel or umbilicus resulting in a bulge of intra-abdominal contents and pain or discomfort as nerves and tissue in this area being irritated and stretched. If an epigastric hernia enlarges, intestines may become trapped inside the hernia leading to intestinal blockage or damage (Strangulation or Incarceration) and becomes a surgical emergency.
![]() Surgery involves repair of the epigastric hernia and the abdominal contents are pushed back into their normal position. Surgical repair of of epigatric hernias is called a Herniorrhaphy.
