Acne

What Is Acne?

Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones and other substances on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands) and hair follicles. These factors lead to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits. Acne lesions usually occur on the face neck back chest and shoulders. Although acne is usually not a serious health threat it can be a source of significant emotional distress. Severe acne can lead to permanent scarring.

We do not know what why acne occurs in some and not others. The way  a pimple develops is very complicated. What we do know is that a pore collapses  and prevents oil escaping. However we don't properly understand why this happens in one  gland rather than another eventually causing acne. The onset of acne is usually around puberty but in a minority of cases it may also start in adulthood. About 80% of people will have some degree of acne between the ages of 11 and 30.

Acne is a skin condition that affects the hair follicles and the sebaceous glands in the skin which secrete an oily substance called sebum. Acne is most common on the face arms back and chest..

In puberty acne occurs because of changes to hormone levels which cause the sebaceous glands to produce increased amounts of sebum. Together with dead skin cells the sebum blocks the hair follicles which enables the formation of ‘spots’ ranging from blackheads to painful red nodules.
