Dry Eyes

Dry Eyes and Dry Eye Syndrome

What is dry eye syndrome? Dry eye syndrome can be characterized by problems with the tear film that keeps the eyes lubricated and moist. Your eyes must be constantly covered by fluid. Your tear film keeps your eyes moist between blinks. If you have a stable tear film then you will not get dry eyes. Your eyes will remain clear and you will remain comfortable. The dry eye syndrome is also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

Supplement your diet with foods that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. These foods include walnuts, cod liver oil, flax seed oil, primrose oil, and cold-water fish. Eating foods rich in vitamin A such as eggs or dark green and yellow vegetables may also help nourish the parts of your eyes that retain moisture.

To alleviate dry eyes: Oil your eyes with a washcloth compress. "Place a warm washcloth on your closed eyelids for five to ten minutes several times a day to help open the clogged oil glands in the eyelids," says Eric Donnenfeld, M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at North Shore University Hospital/Cornell Medical College in Manhasset, New York.

Review of Dry Eye drops available from your local chemist

Optrex Dry Eyes Lubricating Liquid Gel

£5.59 (08450 606070)

The gel felt slightly sticky and thick at first and my eyes blurred for a couple of minutes but it did soothe them. A good solution for dry eyes given the reasonable price.

Boots Comforting Eye Drops

£3.29 (0845 688 0188) These drops didn't make my vision blur but my eyes still felt dry afterwards - and they were slightly bloodshot too.   Bottom place for Boots and the dry eye solution!

Clarymist Spray Relief for Dry Eyes

£12.95 (0800 505555) This was really easy to apply - you simply spray it over closed eyes. I didn't get blurred vision and found the spray quite cooling.  Top marks for this dry eye relief although it is the dearest.
