Yeast Infections and Vaginitis – Are they the same?

No. Yeast infection and Vaginitis are actually different from each other. Yeast infection or vulvovaginal candidiasis involves an excess growth of yeast like organisms in the vagina that lead to itching, swelling and pain during urination and sexual intercourse. When there is yeast infection the woman has a thick whitish discharge from the vagina. Vaginitis on the other hand is an inflammation of the inner lining of the vagina due to infection or a disturbance in the balance of the many organisms that are inside the vagina.

Where is the confusion between Yeast Infections and Vaginitis?

The confusion arises because whenever Vaginitis is mentioned, women tend to believe that they have yeast infection. But the truth is that yeast infection is only one kind of vaginal infection. Vaginitis is caused by a number of infections such as Candida or yeast infections, Bacterial vaginitis, Trichomoniasis vaginitis, Chlamydia vaginitis, Viral vaginitis and Noninfectious vaginitis. Vaginitis

Vaginitis is actually quite common, 75% of all women will have it at some point in their lives. Primarily, there are two distinct types vaginitis. They are… • Atrophic vaginitis and • Allergic vaginitis Atrophic vaginitis is generally caused due to decreased amount of estrogen in females and may occur during menopause or breast feeding. The symptoms are vaginal dryness and a burning sensation. Allergic vaginitis occurs chiefly on account of an allergic reaction to spermacides and in some cases due to the use of latex. The symptoms are a burning sensation, redness, swelling and pain while the woman is urinating. Allergic vaginitis can also be caused by a disturbance in the balance of many normal organisms harboring inside the vagina. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics, changes in hormone levels through pregnancy, breast feeding, menopause, intake of unethical birth control pills, spermacides and in some cases, ruthless sexual activity are believed to be the culprits bringing in the above changes in the balance of the harmless organisms who had made the host vagina their home and hearth.

Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are also quite common and particularly vaginal yeast infections happen to 20% of all women. This happens to women of all ages – from early teens to the later ages. Yeast infections can be caused by depression, fatigue, headaches, irritability, muscle pain, hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills, skin rash, respiratory and urinary problems. The infection can also happen due to an injury in the inner vagina, such as after chemotherapy.

So what is the difference between Yeast Infections and Vaginitis?

While yeast infection is a type of vaginitis, but the two cannot be said to be the same. Vaginitis can be caused by other infections as well apart from yeast infections. And yeast infections can also occur in other parts of the body apart from the vagina.

There can be some confusion between yeast infection and vaginitis because the two are closely related. And actually there is a lot of confusion. But the truth is that, the two are not the same.

To help with bacterial vaginosis drink at least 4 ounces of 100% cranberry juice every day, drink milk with live acidophilus cultures, eat yogurt with live acidophilus cultures, in fact bacterial vaginosis, like any yeast problem will respond to pro-biotics .

 

There are home remedies for bacterial vaginosis, but not all of them can cope with lichen sclerosis, excessive vaginal discharge or long standing and repetitive bacterial vaginosis. It is best to be treated by a physician for this as it could lead to PID.
