Easy Apple Crisp

Easy Apple Crisp

Ingredients

Makes 6 Servings

  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 10 medium apples (any kind except red delicious)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1¼ cups rolled oats (regular, not quick-cooking)
  • 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ cup (packed) brown sugar (light or dark)

Method

  1. Adjust the oven rack to the center position and preheat the oven to 350°f (325°f if you’re using a glass pan)
  2. Pour the lemon juice into a large bowl
  3. Peel, core, and slice the apples, and as you cut them, add the slices to the bowl
  4. As the apples accumulate, toss them with the juice every now and then
  5. When all the apples are sliced and tossed, sprinkle in the granulated sugar and gently toss again
  6. Transfer the apple mixture to a 9-by 13-inch pan, and set it aside
  7. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave (30 to 60 seconds on high power), or in a small saucepan over low heat
  8. Without cleaning it, use the empty apple bowl to combine the oats, flour, salt, and cinnamon, stirring them together briefly
  9. Crumble in the brown sugar, then pour in the melted butter, scraping it all in with a rubber spatula
  10. Use a spoon or fork to mix the butter into the dry ingredients until uniformly blended
  11. Spread this mixture over the apples in the pan, patting everything down as you go so it forms a solid topping, as evenly distributed as possible
  12. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top is crisp and golden and the apples are bubbling around the edges
  13. Let cool for at least 10 minutes
  14. Serve hot, warm, or at room temperature
