Chapati Recipe


Makes 4 servings

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 3 tablespoons vegan margarine, melted


  1. In a large bowl, combine both flours, salt, oil and water to form a soft dough
  2. Knead the dough until smooth, 3 to 5 minutes, then cover tightly with plastic wrap
  3. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes
  4. Preheat oven to 200°F
  5. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces
  6. Roll out each piece of dough on a lightly floured work surface into a circles about 1/8 inch thick
  7. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or skillet over medium heat
  8. Add the chapati, one at a time and cook, turning once, until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side
  9. Transfer the cooked chapati to a heat-proof platter and brush with the melted margarine
  10. Cover loosely with foil and keep warm in the oven while you cook the remaining chapatis
