Age Spots                         see also aging

"The juice of a fresh lemon is acidic enough to safely peel off the upper layer of skin, which will remove or lighten some age spots," says Jerome Z. Litt, M.D.  "Rub it on with a cotton ball twice daily where the age spots are, and in six to eight weeks, they should begin to fade away."

Advice from Ned, Jackson Heights: Rub a piece of sliced red onion on age spots to lighten them.

Try a mixture of aloe vera juice and witch hazel on your age spots.

Advice from Indy, Wolverhampton: Vitamin E oil applied directly to age spots daily will reduce coloration of most age spots.

age spotsAge spots usually appear when we're in our early 30s on areas of the body that have been exposed to the sun, such as our back, chest, arms and hands. Although they may look similar to moles, age spots are very different. Moles are genetically predetermined, while age spots are the result of cumulative sun exposure throughout life.

Sun spots (age spots), also known as lentigines, are harmless, flat, brown discolorations of the skin which usually occur on the back of the hands, neck and face of people older than 40 years of age. These spots more than anything else, give away a person's age. Sun spots are caused by the skin being exposed to the sun over many years and are a sign of sun damage.  Sun spots are harmless and do not need to be treated unless they are changing or getting bigger than the surrounding sun spots.

If you have age spots, you're at a higher risk of developing skin cancer, so it is important to see your doctor if they change colour or appearance or if you are worried about them. Once your doctor gives you a clean bill of health, discuss the various options for minimising the appearance of age spots.

Don't wait for yet another age spot to appear on your hands, face or neck as the summer sun wanes into Autumn this year. Research indicates that you can help to protect your skin from these unsightly brown spots - the result of a life time's accumulation of sun damage - by taking supplements such as selenium and vitamins A and E.
