Eye Mucus

Eye Mucus is often an eye irritation, or conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis, commonly called "pink eye," is a common infection, or inflammation, of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that covers the white of the eye as well as the inside of the eyelids. Symptoms are discomfort, redness, discharge, and a gritty sensation. It is highly contagious and can be passed by hand-to-eye contact, as well as from one eye to the other and by sharing towels and face flannels.

It is worth trying warm water soaks but if an infection is present, these will not help in the long term.

Eye Mucus Witch Hazel

Another favorite for eye mucus if cotton wool soaked in witch hazel.  I find minor problems with eye mucus can be solved by the following:

  • Cleanse the face removing all make-up
  • Soak for 10 minutes with witch hazel on cotton wool
  • Allow to dry thoroughly
  • Apply a light coating of Vaseline to the rims

Often, once eye mucus becomes a problem, removing the crusty material each morning further irritates the eyes.  This regime will allow easy removal of any eye mucus preventing a chicken and egg situation.  If after 2 days there is no lessening of the eye mucus, medical attention should be sought as it is likely to be an infection..

 Eye Mucus

It may well be worth try some over the counter prescription drops to clear your eye mucus quickly, to rule out any bacterial infection.  Still treat your eye mucus with witch hazel but not to soon after the eye drops.
