Easy Portuguese Sweet-Bread Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. grated lemon/orange peel
  • 3 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten with 1 tbsp. milk for glaze

Method

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water
  2. Heat milk and butter until butter melts
  3. Pour into mixing bowl containing sugar and salt
  4. Cool to lukewarm
  5. Add grated peel, eggs and yeast mixture
  6. Gradually beat in flour, adding enough to make a soft dough
  7. Knead until smooth and satiny
  8. Place in greased bowl
  9. Cover with damp towel
  10. Let rise in warm place until double in bulk
  11. Knead gently and shape into a round pan (9 inch)
  12. Let rise again until double
  13. Brush with glaze
  14. Bake at 325 degrees 35-40 minutes or until golden brown
  15. Cool and remove from pan
  16. This is similar to Hawaiian bread
