Natural Cures and Remedies for Fibromyalgia

CFS/FMS is notorious for causing a sleep disorder where stage 3 sleep intrudes into stage 4 sleep. This causes the all too familiar morning sensation of being “run over by a truck.” Fibromyalgia researchers call it “non-refreshing sleep.” Without sufficient stage 4 sleep, growth hormone cannot be produced. Without growth hormone, the cells of the body cannot be properly maintained. This may account for the exaggerated fatigue experienced after exertion. The muscle cells never get the opportunity to completely heal after normal wear and tear. Serotonin is not the only neurotransmitter imbalance in those with CFS/FMS, but many of the symptoms can be moderated by increasing its levels.

Fibromyalgia continues to be considered a controversial diagnosis, lacking a widely accepted scientific consensus as to its cause. Not all members of the medical community regard Fibromyalgia a disease because of a frequent lack of precise abnormalities on physical examination and the absence of objective diagnostic tests or laboratory findings. However, Fibromyalgia has been recognized as a diagnosable disorder by the American College of Rheumatology and the National Institutes of Health.

Fibromyalgia is more common in women than in men. Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect 2-4% of the population, with a female to male incidence ratio of approximately 10 to 1.

Sleep Disorder – Most fibromyalgia patients have an associated sleep disorder known as the alpha-EEG anomaly, which is measurable by recording brain waves during sleep. Researchers found that fibromyalgia syndrome patients could fall asleep without much trouble, but their deep level, or stage 4, sleep was constantly interrupted by repeated bursts of awake-like brain activity. Most patients who have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome have the same alpha-EEG sleep pattern and some fibromyalgia-diagnosed patients have been found to have other sleep disorders, such as sleep myoclonus, or nighttime jerking of the arms and legs; restless leg syndrome; and bruxism.

The cause or causes of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome remain elusive and baffling. There are, however, suspected triggering events that seem to precipitate the syndrome’s onset. Among these triggers are viral or bacterial infections, accidents, or the onset of another unrelated disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or hypothyroidism. Triggering events aren’t the cause of FMS, but they seem to awaken an underlying genetic or physiological abnormality that is already present and that predisposes one to the disease.

Coping with Fibromyalgia – it’s not in your head, it’s a disease was written by Drs. Seiden and Bilett – the same doctors who wrote Coping with Arthritis. Fibromyalgia is a form of arthritis, however, Fibromyalgia pain may come and go and also tends to travel throughout the body, differentiating it from arthritis pain.
