Filhozes Portuguese Doughnuts Recipe


  • 2 1/2 lb. flour (about 10 c.)
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 cube margarine or butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. milk
  • 2 yeast cakes or 2 pkg. dry yeast, dissolved in 1/2 c. warm water
  • 12 eggs, beaten


  1. Be sure that all ingredients are at room temperature
  2. Scald milk
  3. Add margarine and sugar
  4. Cool
  5. Add eggs and yeast
  6. Mix with flour until smooth (use hands or large mixer)
  7. Batter should be soft
  8. Let rise until doubled
  9. Drop by handfuls into hot oil
  10. (Deep fry
  11. Fry until golden brown
  12. Before dropping in oil pull dough into circles
  13. Some people like to have “fingers” of dough
  14. They fry crisp and fattening
  15. When done drain on paper towels
  16. Roll in sugar either granulated or confectioners’
  17. Eat warm
