Basil is also known as Sweet Basil Garden Basil Common Basil Lui Le Tulsi and St. Joseph-wort.  It is an annual plant found wild in tropical and subtropical areas. The bushy stems grows to 1 to 2 feet high.

Basil has an upright stalk branching on all sides with two leaves at every joint. It is grown in gardens mid to late summer. In the Far East the herb was been used as a cough medicine and in Africa to expel worms.

American colonists considered Basil the essential ingredient in snuff to ease headaches and was used as an embalming herb in Ancient Egypt.  Basil includes essential oil (estragol eugenol lineol linalol) caffeic acid tannins beta carotene and vitamin C. It is aromatic and carminative easing flatulence and abdomen pains. The essential oil from basil contains camphor. 

Medicinally Basil has  various topical applications - as a poultice or salve for insect bites acne and ringworm; as a gargle or mouthwash for thrush; as a bath herb for increased energy; and as an eyewash for tired eyes.  The juice can be applied to fungal infections. Basil has been sometimes used for whooping cough.
