Honey Wheat Bread Recipe


  • 2-1/4 tsp. active dry yeast
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 tbsp. toasted wheat germ
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 tbsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. shortening
  • 1/3 cup powdered nonfat milk 1 cup warm water

Instructions For Bread Machine.


  1. Add dry ingredients to bread machine in the order listed
  2. Add shortening and warm water
  3. Set machine to whole wheat or white bread setting

Makes one 1 1/2 lb loaf of Honey Wheat Bread

  1. If you want the bread to rise higher, add one egg yolk to warm water right before starting machine

Manual Instructions.

  1. Separate out 1 cup of flour
  2. Set aside
  3. Mix rest of dry ingredients in a large bowl
  4. In a separate small bowl, mix shortening and warm water
  5. Add to dry ingredients in large bowl all at once
  6. Stir in as much of remaining cup of flour as you can
  7. On a floured board, knead bread until it is smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes)
  8. Put dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease both sides
  9. Cover loosely with wax paper, and allow to rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour)
  10. Punch down dough
  11. Roll with greased hands to remove large air pockets, and shape into a loaf
  12. Place in loaf pan and allow to rise again until almost doubled (about 30-40 minutes)
  13. Twenty minutes into second rising, preheat oven to 375F
  14. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until crust is deep golden brown
  15. Loaf will sound hollow when rapped with the knuckles
  16. Remove from oven
  17. Tip bread out of loaf pan
  18. Allow to cool on a rack for 10 minutes
  19. For a soft crust without added fat, place slightly cooled bread in a plastic bag, and seal
  20. Let bread cool completely to room temperature before slicing
  21. For a crusty loaf, allow to cool completely on the rack, and store in a vented bread keeper
