Irenes Portuguese Sweet-Bread Recipe


  • 2 pkgs. yeast dissolved in 1/2 c. warm water, set aside
  • 5 to 6 eggs
  • 1 tsp. salt & lemon
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter
  • 1 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 8+ c. sifted flour


  1. Heat together, stirring constantly over very low heat, the butter, sugar, eggs, milk and salt and lemon; until butter melts
  2. Remove from heat and stir in yeast
  3. Gradually add the flour until ball is formed but is still sticky
  4. Put in large greased bowl and let triple in size (5 to 8 hours or overnight)
