Shingles is a chicken pox virus ‘resurfacing’, usually when one’s immune system is not working as well as it should. The treatment below, both internal and external, should bring quick relief. If you are not getting satisfactory results, consult a herbalist for stronger immune support and antiviral herbs.

Relieves shingles Mathew Wood (2008) reports this treatment for shingles: steep 1 ounce of bog-bean in 1 pint of water, and take 4 tablespoons several times a day. e constituent menyanthin normalizes the central nervous system, which is perhaps why bogbean is helpful for treating shingles. I would consider prescribing bogbean for other viral conditions as well.

It is considered a natural remedy for cold, sores, shingles and genital herpes. In a study published in 1983, a group of researchers polled over 1,500 people whose daily intake of lysine was over 900 mg. 88 per cent said that lysine seemed to reduce the severity of their attacks of herpes virus and accelerated the healing time. These results have, however, been disputes by some scientists.

Apply the ointment for shingles described above right – it will ease the pain and speed up the recovery (precautions for essential oils apply).

Neuralgia is a pain caused by damage to or inflammation of the nervous tissue. The most common types of neuralgia are: trigeminal neuralgia, neuralgia that can follow shingles or herpes, and neuralgia associated with sciatica. Irrespective of which type, you will benefit from both internal treatment and the external application of herbs that are anti-inflammatory and regenerative to the nervous tissue. The antiviral properties of St John’s wort come in useful for neuralgia associated with shingles or herpes; use internally as a tincture and externally as an infused oil.
