Authentic Portuguese Easter Bread Recipe


  • 1 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 envelopes active dry yeast
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 7 c. unbleached white flour
  • 6 tbsp. powdered milk
  • 6 beaten eggs
  • 6 tbsp. soft butter or margarine
  • 1 tsp. salt


  1. Dissolve yeast in water
  2. Add sugar, powdered milk, and 2 cups of the flour
  3. Let bubble for 1/2 hour
  4. Add 5 eggs, butter and salt, then enough flour to make a smooth, kneadable dough
  5. Punch down, cut in half and shape into 2 round loaves; place in 2 greased 9-inch pie tins
  6. Let rise until doubled
  7. Carefully brush with remaining beaten egg and bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes
  8. This bread is also known as Hawaiian bread
