Ingredients

- 1 cup butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 Egg yolks
- 1 1/4 teaspoons soda
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon cloves
- 1 teaspoon all-spice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 4 Egg whites – beaten stiffly
- 2 cups blackberry jam
Method
- Cream butter and sugar together; add yolks of eggs one at a time, and mix well.
- Put soda in milk, stir, and add to first mixture.
- Sift flour and spices together and add to mixture.
- Add the stiffly beaten egg whites, and lastly the jam.
- Mix well and bake in three layers in 9 inch layer pans.
- Bake in moderate hot oven, (375 degrees) for 35 minutes.
- Frost with Caramel Icing,
