Crispy Tofu With Sizzling Caper Sauce


Makes 4 servings

  • 1 pound extra-firm tofu, drained, cut into 1/4-inch slices and pressed
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus more if needed
  • 1 medium shallot, minced
  • 3 tablespoons capers
  • 3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
  • 2 tablespoons vegan margarine Juice of 1 lemon


  1. Preheat the oven to 275°F
  2. Pat the tofu dry and season with salt and pepper to taste
  3. Place the cornstarch in a shallow bowl
  4. Dredge the tofu in the cornstarch, coating all sides
  5. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil over medium heat
  6. Add the tofu, in batches if necessary and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 4 minutes per side
  7. Transfer the fried tofu to a heatproof platter and keep warm in the oven
  8. In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium heat
  9. Add the shallot and cook until softened, about 3 minutes
  10. Add the capers and parsley and cook for 30 seconds, then stir in the margarine, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste, stirring to melt and incorporate the margarine
  11. Top the tofu with caper sauce and serve immediately
