Ground Beef Shawarma Rice Slow Cooker Recipe

Active Time 15 minutes

Saute; Pressure/Manual (High) Natural/Quick Release

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound 85% lean ground beef
  • 1 cup diced yellow onions
  • 4 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1½ cups basmati rice, rinsed and drained
  • 1½ cups water or chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons Shawarma Spice Mix
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional)


  1. Select SAUTE on the Instant Pot
  2. When the pot is hot, add the oil
  3. When the oil is hot, add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds
  4. Add the ground beef and onions and cook, stirring just enough to break up the clumps, for 2 to 3 minutes (don’t worry about cooking the beef fully at this stage)
  5. Add the cabbage, rice, water, spice mix, and salt
  6. Stir well to combine
  7. Select CANCEL
  8. Secure the lid on the pot
  9. Close the pressure-release valve
  10. Select MANUAL and set the pot at HIGH pressure for 5 minutes
  11. At the end of the cooking time, allow the pot to sit undisturbed for 5 minutes, then release any remaining pressure
  12. Stir gently to fluff the rice
  13. Garnish with cilantro, if desired, and serve
