Indian Sookhi Urad Dal Slow Cooker Recipe

Pressure/Manual (High) Natural/Quick Release

  • 1 cup urad dal (split black lentils)
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onions
  • 1 cup chopped seeded tomatoes
  • ¾ cup water
  • 2 teaspoons Ghee or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 1 teaspoon amchoor (mango powder)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • naan, roti, or lavash, for serving


  1. In the Instant Pot, combine the urad dal, onions, tomatoes, water, ghee, turmeric, cayenne, garam masala, and amchoor
  2. Stir to combine
  3. Secure the lid on the pot
  4. Close the pressure-release valve
  5. Select MANUAL and set the pot at HIGH pressure for 3 minutes
  6. At the end of the cooking time, allow the pot to sit undisturbed for 10 minutes, then release any remaining pressure
  7. Stir in the lemon juice
  8. Divide the dal among four shallow bowls
  9. Garnish with the cilantro
  10. Serve with the flatbread of your choice
