Ginger Tofu With Citrus Hoisin Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

Makes 4 servings

  • 1 pound extra-firm tofu, drained, patted dry and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon canola or grapeseed oil
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
  • 3 green onions, minced
  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

  1. Place the tofu in a shallow bowl
  2. Add the soy sauce and toss to coat, then sprinkle with 2tablespoons of cornstarch and toss to coat
  3. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the canola oil over medium heat
  4. Add the tofu and cook until golden brown, turning occasionally, about 10 minutes
  5. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside
  6. In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 teaspoon canola oil and the sesame oil over medium heat
  7. Add the ginger and green onions and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute
  8. Stir in the hoisin sauce, broth and orange juice and bring to a simmer
  9. Cook until the liquid is reduced slightly and the flavors have a chance to meld, about 3 minutes
  10. In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1 teaspoon cornstarch with the lime juice and lemon juice and add to the sauce, stirring to thicken slightly
  11. Season with salt and pepper to taste
  12. Return the fried tofu to the skillet and cook until coated with the sauce and heated through
  13. Serve immediately
